Fatih: Hagia Sophia underground restoration, November 2026

What happened
Hürriyet Daily News reported on 3 November 2026 that Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said restoration at Hagia Sophia in Fatih aims to open previously inaccessible underground tunnels, chambers and burial structures to visitors. Since February 2025, about 3,000 tons of mud and debris have been removed from the underground spaces. Opening any section depends on completing conservation and safety measures, and exhibition plans are under evaluation.
What it means for buyers
For a buyer weighing Fatih, this matters if cultural sites and visitor numbers are part of daily life near the property; it matters less if the focus is on residential amenities, and no opening date has been given.
